Visian ICL – Phakic Intraocular Lens
Phakic intraocular lenses were first developed in 1992, at the Fyodorov Institute in Russia; the Visian ICL has undergone extensive development and rigorous clinical trials, resulting in the product now being available for use worldwide and in the US. These Phakic intraocular lenses, or lenses that are inserted into the eye and work with the natural lens, have been used successfully to treat vision disorders since 2005.
Unlike corneal refractive surgery, such as LASIK and PRK, the Visian ICL does not alter the structure of the eye, or involve tissue removal. Instead, the lens is inserted inside of the eye and works with the eye’s natural optical system (cornea and lens) to enhance its performance.
During a brief outpatient procedure, the Visian ICL can be implanted into a myopic eye with or without astigmatism* to correct nearsightedness or into a hyperopic eye to correct the farsightedness. Your Zeiter Eye surgeon creates a small opening during a short surgical procedure and inserts the Visian ICL which allows for an almost immediate improvement in visual acuity. This extremely quick visual recovery is one of the many reasons surgeons choose this phakic IOL technology for vision correction.
Although the Visian ICL is a permanent solution for vision correction, the lenses are removable should the need ever arise to adjust the patients vision correction in the future. This benefit makes the Visian ICL an attractive alternative to corneal-based refractive surgery.
The Visian ICL provides superior quality of vision compared to the results of corneal refractive procedures. It is an ideal choice for patients with high expectations of the benefits from their refractive correction procedures. The phakic IOL is often referred to as an implantable contact lens because, like a contact lens, it works with the eye’s natural lens to correct a refractive error. Unlike a contact lens, the Visian ICL is surgically placed in the eye and does not have to be removed or cleaned at the end of the day. The Visian ICL also won’t slip out of place like a traditional contact lens.

Is Visian ICL Right for you?
An eye exam with an ophthalmologist is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for Visian ICL surgery. In general, however, some people are better suited for the procedure than others. Below are some guidelines to determine if you are a good candidate for the Visian ICL procedure.
The Visian ICL Candidate:
Good candidates for the Visian ICL include patients who:
- Are between the ages of 21 and 45.
- Are nearsighted with or without astigmatism* or farsighted*, including those with mild, moderate, and severe myopia (as low as -3D to as high as -20D prescription) with minor or no occurrence of astigmatism. The Visian Toric ICL™, capable of correcting myopia with astigmatism, is currently under review with the U.S. FDA. The Visian TICL™ is currently available only outside of the United States.
- Have sufficient anterior chamber depth and acceptable endothelial cell density (this will be determined by an ophthalmologist after a comprehensive eye exam).
- Have not had a change in their eyeglass prescription of more than 0.5D in a year.
- Are not currently pregnant.
- Have no other contraindications including no known allergies to medications used during refractive surgery.
- Have dry eyes, severe myopia, or a thin cornea (non-LASIK candidate).
Benefits of Visian ICL
High quality of vision – The Visian ICL not only improves your visual acuity, but it also enhances your quality of vision by producing sharp, vivid vision with greater depth and dimension. These are the unique advantages that define what we call “High Definition Visian™.”
Wide treatment range – In comparison to other refractive procedures, the Visian ICL offers the widest treatment range for treating myopia (as low as -3.0 diopters to as high as -20.0 diopters).
The “Wow” Factor – After a simple 15-minute outpatient procedure, patients experience an immediate improvement in vision quality and are “Wowed” by the results. In fact, over 99% of patients were satisfied with the Visian ICL procedure.
Short Recovery Time – Because the Visian ICL is foldable, only a small opening is required during the procedure (3mm or 1/10 inch). This feature makes the procedure efficient and dramatically reduces healing time. In fact, the Visian ICL offers full recovery typically in 1-2 days, with minimal discomfort.
Removable – The Visian ICL is inserted into the eye by an ophthalmologist through a small, micro opening. The lens unfolds in the eye and is positioned between the iris and the natural lens where it stays indefinitely. If your vision changes dramatically, however, the Visian ICL can be removed from the eye by a simple surgical procedure without permanent damage. LASIK, on the other hand, involves the removal of corneal tissue, and is not reversible.
Invisible – The placement of the Visian ICL into the posterior chamber of the eye makes the lens invisible to both the patient and any observer.
*Visian ICL’s are approved in the U.S. to correct myopia. ICL’s that correct for astigmatism or hyperopia have not been approved for use in the U.S.
VISIAN ICL Myopia Treatment
As studies show, corrective eye surgery with the Visian ICL presents a low risk of complications, predictable outcomes, excellent vision correction, and a low incidence of high-order aberrations – lower than currently offered by refractive surgical procedures such as LASIK. The Visian ICL has some advantages over PRK and LASIK corrective laser eye surgery, and can improve the vision of those who may not be good LASIK candidates.
