PRK / Surface Ablation
PRK corrective surgery offered in Stockton, Manteca, Lodi, Tracy and Sonora
The first kind of corrective eye surgery to use a laser rather than a very sharp blade to remove the corneal tissue is called Photorefractive Keratectomy, or PRK now known as surface ablation surgery. Although the Food and Drug Administration approved the excimer laser for PRK corrective eye surgery in 1995, this laser was originally developed in the early 1970’s and first modified for ophthalmic use in the early 1980s.
Originally PRK was developed to treat myopia by removing a small amount of the cornea with a laser, however refinements in PRK technology allowed surgeons to also treat patients with hyperopia, or farsightedness, and astigmatism. PRK does not require the creation of a flap in the cornea. Instead, the laser is applied directly to the surface of the cornea. Although the post-operative recovery and healing process takes longer, the visual outcomes with this surface ablation are considered excellent.
