LASIK – Laser Assisted in-situ Keratomileusis

Laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis, better known as  LASIK, was initially developed in 1989 by Ioannis Pallikaris, a surgeon who practiced in Greece. As in the automated procedure lamellar keratoplasty, LASIK requires the creation of a flap in the cornea before surgical eye correction can take place. The Food and Drug Administration approved the first LASIK corrective eye surgery in 1999.

There are several reasons LASIK has become the most popular corneal refractive procedure. The laser used to reshape the cornes to correct refractive errors of the eye is precise and accurate. Visual recovery after surgery is quick. Also, creation of a corneal flap significantly reduces the amount of post-operative discomfort. Visual results are excellent.

Is LASIK Right for You?

An eye exam with an ophthalmologist is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery. In general, however, some people are better suited for the procedure than others. Below are some guidelines to determine if you are a good candidate for the LASIK procedure.

A suitable LASIK patient:

  • Is 18 years of age or older.
  • Has had a stable corrective lens prescription for over a year.
  • Has a prescription within -0.25 to -12.00 diopters of Myopia or up to 6.00 diopters of Hyperopia (farsightedness) or has an astigmatism up to 6.00 diopters.
  • Has healthy eyes free from disease or serious aliments.
  • Is informed of both the risks and benefits of LASIK.
  • Knows the alternatives to LASIK.
  • Has a realistic expectation of how LASIK can improve vision.

If you think you may be a good candidate for LASIK surgery, find out for sure by contacting the skilled ophthalmologists at Zeiter Eye.
